The Motivating Power of “WHY”

Last week I guided you through creating your own healthy living action plan (or cheating and having me create yours for you). We talked about the 2 BIG questions to ask yourself so you don’t make falling in BodyLove any harder than it needs to be.

Today we are going to talk about the real question behind it all – the one that leads to major shifts for my clients.

The REAL question behind it all: “WHY?”

What’s your WHY?

First look back at last week’s question 1: “What do you REALLY want?”

Once you know WHAT you want, take a moment to think about WHY you want it. If you have certain routine activities in your life, think about WHY you do them.

I lift weights 3 hours a week because I love feeling strong and fit. If I stopped lifting, that feeling would go away. So I’m driven to go week after week. It isn’t the weights themselves that call to me – instead, it’s my WHY that keeps me showing up.

Your WHY is what motivates you to accomplish the impossible.

It keeps you moving forward on your journey, keeps you from becoming complacent.

Let your WHY drive you

A client of mine was feeling icky about her body. During a session, I asked her when she had last felt confident and grounded in her body.

She lit up when she spoke about her summer working for a juice bar. She walked constantly to make deliveries and drank nourishing juices every day. As a result, she felt energetic and alive.

All she wanted was to just go back to that feeling. That was her WHY.

So I asked her to hold that WHY in her mind when she adds fresh greens to her meals or goes for her morning walk. When I checked back in with her a week later, she said picturing her WHY kept her motivated and excited to walk every day and start making conscious food choices at every meal.

Yes, she lost weight in just a week after our initial session. But, most importantly, she began to feel alive and energized again. She began to recapture that amazing feeling.

And if you’re anything like me, THAT is what you are really searching for when you say you want to fit into our “skinny jeans”. You want to feel how you used to feel. You are being driven by your WHY without realizing it. So harness it’s power, and put it to work motivating you.
