A Trick to Keep Your Energy Flowing When You Sit All Day for Work

Back in my first career in architecture, a typical day for me was sitting down glued to my chair in front of the computer for 8 hours at a time, drafting in a computer program called CAD.

I got to stand up three times during the day – at 10 for a morning break, at noon for lunch, and for my afternoon break at 3pm. Ugh. It still makes me shiver to remember those days.

And let me tell you, after just a few months of that, my legs and back were hurting and it was probably THE MOST sluggish and mentally foggy I have ever felt. At the ripe age of 22.

This shifted dramatically when I entered the natural resource world and started working as a Plant Ecologist. Suddenly I was on my feet moving around between tasks, driving to meetings with other agencies, hiking to project sites.

And it was the lightest and most energized I’d ever felt.

But when I transitioned to working for myself as an online entrepreneur, I felt myself falling back into those same architecture patterns. Sitting hunched in front of the computer, not pulling away for hours in the middle of a project.

So how have I woven the energy I had as a Plant Ecologist into my entrepreneurial lifestyle?

Today’s #FeedYourHustle Habit:

Take movement breaks every hour to keep your energy flowing through the workday.

As I found in my architecture days, sitting all day stagnates your energy. (Of course, the box of donuts which always showed up in the break room every Friday on top of that didn’t help.)

To shake it up and keep your energy flowing through the workday, set your phone alarm to take a movement break every hour.

Then when it goes off, stand up and stretch. Or do jumping jacks. Or 5 minutes of yoga moves. Or something else fun for you (dance part-ay!)

Try it every day this workweek – and then let me know how it goes over in the Facebook group.

What are you going to do during your movement breaks this week?
